Windscreen Replacement Sydney — What It Involves and What It Costs

A cracked windscreen is more than a cosmetic issue — it weakens the roof structure and can fail a roadworthiness check. Here is what the replacement process involves and how to avoid overpaying.

A cracked or chipped windscreen is one of those repairs many Sydney drivers put off. But a crack that starts small almost always grows — particularly through the temperature swings of a Greater Sydney summer. More importantly, a cracked screen is a structural safety issue: the windscreen contributes to the rigidity of your car's roof and acts as a backstop for the passenger airbag.

Repair or Replace? How to Tell

Not every chip or crack requires a full replacement. A resin repair is often sufficient if the damage is smaller than a 20-cent coin, does not extend to the edge of the glass, and is not directly in the driver's primary sightline. Chips within the wiper sweep zone should be assessed carefully — even a small imperfection in that area can distort vision enough to be considered dangerous.

  • Chip smaller than 20-cent coin, away from driver sightline — resin repair likely sufficient
  • Crack longer than 15 cm — full replacement required
  • Crack reaching the edge of the glass — full replacement required (edge cracks spread rapidly)
  • Multiple chips or a star-break pattern — assess with a technician; replacement often cheaper long-term
  • Chip directly in driver's sightline — replace even if small, as resin leaves a slight distortion

OEM vs Aftermarket Glass — What Is the Difference?

OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) glass is made by the same supplier that produced the original windscreen for your car — same thickness, curvature, tint, and acoustic properties. Aftermarket glass meets Australian safety standards (AS/NZS 2080) but may vary slightly in optical clarity, UV tint, or acoustic dampening depending on the manufacturer.

For most vehicles, a quality aftermarket windscreen is a perfectly reasonable choice. For newer vehicles with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) — particularly those with a camera mounted to the windscreen for lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking, or adaptive cruise control — OEM or an OEM-equivalent glass with the same optical properties is strongly recommended to ensure the camera recalibration is accurate.

ADAS note

If your vehicle has a front camera for ADAS features, the camera must be recalibrated after any windscreen replacement. Using glass with the wrong optical properties can result in calibration errors that cause the safety systems to perform incorrectly — a significant risk. We perform camera recalibration on-site as part of the replacement.

How Much Does Windscreen Replacement Cost in Sydney?

Pricing depends on the vehicle, whether ADAS recalibration is required, and whether you choose OEM or aftermarket glass. As a guide, most passenger vehicle windscreen replacements start from $250 for straightforward aftermarket fitments. Vehicles requiring ADAS recalibration typically add $100–$300 to the total. European vehicles and luxury SUVs with acoustic or heated glass can run higher.

  • Standard passenger car, no ADAS — from $250
  • SUV or large vehicle, no ADAS — from $300
  • Vehicle with ADAS camera recalibration — add $100–$300
  • European / prestige vehicles — quote on application
  • Chip repair (resin) — from $80

Many comprehensive car insurance policies cover windscreen replacement with no excess, or a reduced excess. It is worth checking your policy before paying out of pocket — we can provide a tax invoice and a description of the work for your insurer.
