EV and Hybrid Servicing in Sydney: What You Actually Need
Electric and hybrid vehicles still need regular maintenance — but the service schedule looks different. Here is what Greater Sydney EV owners need to know.
Sydney has one of the fastest-growing EV uptake rates in Australia, and suburbs across Greater Sydney — with short commutes and growing home-charging infrastructure — are leading the charge. But we still get the same question every week: do EVs actually need servicing?
The answer is yes — just differently. Here is what changes, what stays the same, and what you should do to keep your EV or hybrid in the best possible shape.
What EVs Still Need
- Brake service — regenerative braking reduces wear, but calipers can seize if pads are not moved periodically
- Tyre rotation and alignment — EVs are heavy, torquey vehicles that eat tyres differently than ICE cars
- Cabin air filter and HVAC service — the climate system still uses filters and refrigerant
- Coolant system checks — battery thermal management uses coolant that degrades over time
- 12V auxiliary battery — often overlooked; fails just like any other lead-acid battery
- Wiper blades, washer fluid and general safety inspection
What Hybrids Need That Differs from Pure EVs
Toyota, Lexus and Mazda hybrids still have a petrol engine that needs oil changes and logbook servicing. The hybrid system adds a high-voltage battery and electric motor — but the petrol engine still runs and wears. Follow the hybrid-specific schedule in your logbook; it is usually similar to a regular petrol service but with a few additional HV system checks.
The High-Voltage Safety Issue
This is where it gets serious. HV systems in EVs and hybrids operate at 200–800V — enough to be lethal. Not every mechanic is trained or equipped to work safely on these vehicles. In NSW, technicians working on HV systems should hold a current high-voltage hybrid/EV qualification (typically a Certificate III or IV in Electrotechnology or equivalent OEM training).
Our credentials
Elite Auto Mechanical technicians hold current HV qualifications and are equipped with the insulated tooling and PPE required to safely inspect and service EV and hybrid systems. We service Toyota and Lexus hybrids, Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, BYD, Hyundai IONIQ and Kia EV6 variants.
Battery Health Checks
The most common concern for EV owners is battery degradation — the gradual loss of range over time. We can connect to your vehicle's battery management system and pull the State of Health (SoH) data to give you a snapshot of how your battery is tracking. It is a good check to include at the annual service, especially for vehicles out of the manufacturer's battery warranty period.
What About Charging and Software?
Software updates and charging optimisation generally sit outside the scope of independent servicing — for over-the-air updates, you will want your manufacturer's app or a dealer visit. What we can do is check charging port integrity, diagnose any fault codes related to the battery or charging system, and advise when a dealer visit is warranted.
