Pink Slip vs Green Slip in NSW: What Is the Difference?
Many drivers confuse the two — but a pink slip and a green slip are completely different documents that serve completely different purposes. Here is what you need to know.
Every year, NSW drivers renewing their registration get confused about what is needed and why. Pink slip, green slip, eSafety — it is a lot of jargon for what should be a straightforward process. Here is a plain-English breakdown.
What Is a Pink Slip (eSafety Check)?
A pink slip — now officially called an 'eSafety check' — is a vehicle safety inspection carried out by an authorised inspection station. Its job is to verify that your vehicle is roadworthy: brakes work, lights work, tyres are legal, steering is sound, and there are no structural defects.
You need a pink slip when your vehicle is more than 5 years old and you are renewing registration. Vehicles less than 5 years old are exempt from the physical inspection but still require registration renewal through the usual process.
- Done by: Authorised inspection stations (licensed workshops like Elite Auto Mechanical)
- Covers: Safety — brakes, lights, tyres, steering, body structure, exhaust
- Valid for: 42 days from the inspection date
- Cost: Fixed government fee — around $42–$45 depending on vehicle class
What Is a Green Slip?
A green slip — formally called a Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance certificate — is not a vehicle inspection. It is an insurance policy that covers people injured in a motor vehicle accident. It is mandatory for all registered vehicles in NSW and is purchased from an approved CTP insurer, not your mechanic.
- Done by: Approved CTP insurers (NRMA, QBE, Allianz, GIO, etc.)
- Covers: Personal injury compensation for anyone injured in an accident involving your car
- Does NOT cover: Vehicle damage, property damage, or your own injuries as the driver
- How to buy: Online via the Service NSW green slip calculator or directly from your insurer
Important distinction
Your mechanic can issue your pink slip. Nobody but a licensed CTP insurer can issue your green slip. If someone claims to sort both in one place, something is not right.
What Order Do You Do Them In?
To renew registration, you will generally: (1) get your pink slip from an authorised station like ours; (2) buy a green slip online from a CTP insurer; (3) pay registration fees to Service NSW — either online or at a service centre. The pink slip is submitted electronically by the inspection station directly to Service NSW.
